The AMVCAs have come and gone, and we were not disappointed. The fashion was definitely something to talk about…both in the good and bad sense. Some newbies pleasantly surprised us, whilst some red carpet slayers decided not to bother bringing their slay game. It definitely had its high and low points, but overall…it was a great display of fashion.
Here are our best and worst dressed from the night!
5. Eku Edewor as styled by Bubu Ogisi
You know why we’ve always loved Eku? She has always had her own style. She doesn’t follow the trend…instead, she sets it! So whilst most of social media is gagging negatively over her ensemble, we love it! Thank you for the fashion, Eku! We truly appreciate you not giving us vanilla…but passion fruit coconut baybee! And for a new mom…girl, we salute you! Your body is just sick!
4. Michelle Dede in Zizi Cardow
At first sight, Michelle looked lovely, but not extraordinary. But the more you stared at her, the more that royal blue dress, with the black lace detail, took a life of its own! The sexy cut-outs and deep neckline added some spectacular va va voom to this outfit, making her literally set the carpet on fire! She would give many younger girls a run for their money any day!
3. Beverly Naya in Weizdhurm Franklyn
Miss Naya always kills it on the red carpet…always! And Weizdhurm Franklyn is one designer that knows how to glam up a woman! Another lady whose dress he designed was Sika Osei’s, and she looked absolutely phenomenal. In this black, floaty number, Beverly is serving equal parts of sexy and vulnerable, sultry and innocent! We absolutely LOVE IT!
2. Somkele Iyamah-Idhalama in Andrea Iyamah
Somkele! To say this woman is a revelation would be putting it mildly. She served FASHION on a big plate! Her dress was just as futuristic as it was sublime! She looked like a GLAMAZON, not only working the red carpet, but also on stage, accepting her Trailblazer award. We love, love, love this young woman!
1. Adesua Etomi in Mai Atafo
Some people have called her dress a knock-off of a Marchesa dress. Well, we don’t kurr! When we saw Adesua, our hearts stopped and our breaths were taken away. In the floral, organza number, she floated onto the red carpet like a beautiful, breezy angel…and we just had to bow down! All hail the queen!!!
And now…the not-so-fun part!
5. Uche Jombo styled by Yolanda Okereke
I really don’t have the words for this red velvet number. It’s just way too much fabric, and way too much design! Usually, we would give her a free pass for these things, but not with this one! Bad fail, Uche. Bad!
4. Chigul in KaykuChe
The lovely ‘Chigul’ looked beautiful, no doubt! If this were a wedding, we would be giving her top marks for looking stunning! Her hair and makeup were just ON POINT! But this wasn’t a wedding, and for the red carpet, this aso-ebi looking attire just won’t do. Sweetie, next time, please get a stylist. If one did this to you, they should be fired with immediate effect!
3. Rita Dominic in Lanre da-Silva
It pains me to have Rita on this list. It will truly hurts! This is someone who slays, year after his year. Every awards show, the world waits with bated breath to see what the lovely Miss Dominic will be wearing. But this year, Lanre Da-Silva didn’t do her good at all! It was literally a copy-and-paste from what she wore last year, so I can’t understand why Lanre wouldn’t have wanted to jazz things up a notch this year. Please get it right next year, babes! We’re counting on you! We don’t like you on this list!
2. Waje in Vogue Africaine
Waje…what on earth was this mess of a gown?! You, who have been slaying consistently, for the last one year at least, subject yourself, and indeed the rest of the world, to this golden debacle? Such a matronly, dated design, I truly don’t understand the rationale for this dress. The bedazzled (if I can call it that) fabric does little to disguise the lazy design of this dress. In a floral print, she could as well be on the beach. A mess!
1. Helen Paul styled by Hyperfashun
We know she likes to effect a child’s voice…which is all fine and good, for TV. But on the red carpet, it’s a flaming DISASTER! Looking at her, all I could think was “WHO DID THIS TO YOU?!”. And with that oversize bow at the back, she looks a HOT MESS!
So, that’s it folks! Please let us know what you think in the comment section.
